About Beit Shalom
The Jewish Congregation of Maui has come a long way from the days when we were a small
collection of Jews from various backgrounds meeting together on the beach and
other locations. In 1991, that group
committed to stabilizing our presence on Maui and acquired non-profit status
and incorporation for Beit Shalom. Since
then, we pulled our Rabbi away from his passion of whales and ignited his fervor
for the eclectic community of Jews that not only resides on Maui, but visits
throughout the year from locations around the world.
We would like to invite you on a stroll down memory lane for
just a bit. It is fun to see how far we
have come. As mentioned, we started out
meeting on the beach, which was wonderful for that time. However, in 1998, with the help of dedicated
members, we purchased a building which allows us to hold our services and host
events.
In 1999, the Hebrew school also settled into our permanent
home where our keiki (little ones) can learn and grow in their Jewish
heritage. We now have 22+ regular students. In 2010 alone, our school grew by seven
students!
In 2004, we began offering Israeli Folk Dancing Lessons,
which has been big hit for residents and visitors alike. We also have a weekly community support group
led by two private therapists from our congregation. Both of these weekly events are just two ways
JCM contribute Tikun Olam. Fixing the World around us and making it a better
place.
Each year we offer a variety of Jewish educational
experiences. We are currently involved
in our first Judaism 101 class, from the American Jewish University, that has eleven
regular students. There has been an
interesting influx this year of people coming from other religions but desiring
to practice Judaism and learn more about their Jewish roots. We also offer a class in Israel advocacy provided
by The David project and sponsored by the Avi Chai Foundation.
The last few years have been difficult for the residents of Maui and members all over. The need for our services and support have
grown significantly during that time.
Yet, things are looking up. The
economy is easing and people are beginning to feel hopeful again. This year, the sunshine seems just a little
bit warmer, the flowers are blooming a little bit brighter and their fragrance
is a little bit sweeter.
These are just a few of the things the Jewish Congregation
of Maui has been up to and is doing this, its 20th year. We would like to invite you to celebrate with
us. As we pondered how we could do that
this year, we realized that we still feel that every contribution to our
congregation is precious and we want to maximize its impact here. That is why we are going to forgo a large
gala and instead we are asking everyone that is part of our network of friends,
family and visitors to send $20 in celebration of our 20th birthday. Of course, do not feel limited by this
amount. Larger donations are accepted
and celebrated as well.
We want to thank all of you for being a part of our
community. You are the reason we do what
we do. We celebrate each day with you."זֶה הַיּוֹם עָשָׂה ה, נָגִֽילָה
וְנִשְׂמְחָה בוֹ"
“This is the day G-d
made, let us exult and rejoice in it”
